This trip is an overland trip from Yunnan province to Tibet. The major interesting and attractive sceneries are detailed in highlight.
Shangri-La is the main destination in Yunnan, and road leads towards the administrative capital city of Tibet offers a lot of astonishing natural landscape, including subtropical climate, Tibet plateau climate, some of the world highest mountains, the highest salt lake, Tibet cultural trip and so on. It is one of the overland trip line favored by most of domestic tourists.

Itinerary Detailed:
Yunnan-Tibet Overland Tour — 11 day

Season: Spring, Summer, Autumn

Day one: Shangrila tour

Morning Activities

The representative assigned for your trip will pick you from the hotel to visit Songtsenling monastery, which was founded under the advice of Fifth Dalai Lama, Lobsang Gyatso in 1681. Today, the monastery rooms about 600 monks practice Tibetan Buddhist ritual activities.

Afternoon Activities

Post lunch is free to explore Gyalthang town and prepare for the overland tour to Tibet.

Day two: Shangrila – Dechen

Distance coverage: 190km, 7 hrs drive

First Stop

The second day is a long journey and starts from Shangrila toward Dechen. We drive along Yangtse river and twisting in the fertile valley, then stop at the best viewpoint of Mt. Khawa Karpo, which is the highest peak in Yunan province. The mountain is considered as a holy mountain and it is a major pilgrim destination for many Tibetan Buddhists.

Destination

Afterward, we travel to Dechen which is around 10km away on drive. Breathtaking view of Mt. Khawa Karpo is also viewable from  Dechen.

Day three: Dechen – Mangkham

Distance coverage: 332km, 6 hrs drive

Morning Drive

The third day trip starts from Dechen. We  drive throught district highway and across Dungala pass, then pass over the ridges offers spectacular views of Mt. Dungri Karpo to cross Joba La pass. The barren sandstone and Mekong river are the two major landscape and feature of the region.

Afternoon Drive

Finally a gradual ascent on the east bank leads across Laoshan passs(4060m) into the alpine meadows of Markham, there we will meet the southern Sichuan-Tibet highway.

Day four: Mangkham – Basho

Distance coverage: 365km, 8 hrs drive

Morning Drive

The first challenging experience happens on fourth day. Once left from Mangkham, we drive across the first highest peak – Mt. Dongdo with altitude of 5108 meters. Rolling down from the peak, we follow Yachu river, a tributary of Salween river to meet spur road to Chamdo.

Afternoon Drive

Dusty road drive down into valley with 72 degree bends is considered as the worst part of the trip. However, the villages located along the stream lead us to Basho.

Day five: Basho – Bomi

Distance coverage: 222km, 6 hrs drive

Morning Drive

We start the drive from Basho toward Ranwu, a popular tourist destination for many domestic tourists visiting Tibet. As we drive further, the climate become better, and forest gets thinker along the road as the altitude becomes lower.

Afternoon Drive

Enjoyable moment at Ranwu gives a very pleasant feeling for visitors. After our time at Ranwu, we drive towards the destination of the day – Bomi.

Day six: Bomi – Bayi

Distance coverage: 234km, 6 hrs drive

Morning Drive

The beautiful green valley with snow-capped mountains appearing far behind and colorful wild blossoms,  titled as Switzerland of Tibet is the scenery of the entire trip. We drive over the photogenic suspension bridge over Yigong Tsangpo,  Rongchu Valley, and we enjoy the special unique zone on Tibetan plateau that is characterized with subtropical climate.

Afternoon Drive

Lulang is known as cypress forest, ascent through a series of switchback from picturesque Rongchu valley to the Serkym La pass. We stop at the Serkym la scenic spot that gives you a perfect view of thorough Rongchu valley, Mt. Namcha Barwa and Mt.Gyala Palri. There it is only 60km to Bayi.

Day seven: Bayi – Lhasa

Distance coverage: 408km, 8 hrs drive

Morning Drive

Today, we drive along Nyanchu river upstream, and stop at Basum lake which is around 50km off from the national highway. There are also several best-known folk stories about the surrounding snow capped peaks in Tibet. There we need to across the board floating bridge to visit the historical Nyinmapa monastery amid the island.

Afternoon Drive

Afternoon we continue drive toward west, cross over the Mila pass. Over the pass, you feel the dry plateau climate and the bare mountains are the real feature of the central Tibet. Further drive along the Lhasa river, a glimpse of Potala Palace far from the distant that perching up from the rest of the city impresses you.

Day eight: Lhasa trip

Morning Drive

The first trip spot is the Potala Palace, and it is also considered as one of world eight wonders. In the morning, our trip specialist assigned to your group will pick you from the hotel, and takes you to view the outside and inside structure of the palace, and share you the details story of the masterpiece of Tibetan architecture.

Afternoon Drive

Afternoon trip is to Jokhang temple and Barkhor street. Jokhang temple is one of the most sacred religious temple with thousands of faithful worshiper coming different parts of Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Barkhor is the outer circle of the temple, hosted with many tourist mall and stores.

Day nine: Lhasa trip

Morning Drive

In the morning you walk through the narrow and twisted lane of the small temples hosted in Drepung monastery, which houses about ten thousand monk and titled as The Largest Buddhist monastery. Norbu Lingka is the summer palace, thus is considered a sacred palace. There you will visit some of the major palaces built at different period over the history.

Afternoon Drive

The day trip end with a visit to the Sera Monastery. The monastery has hosted a number of Tibetan Buddhist Philosophical colleges, and a lot of Buddhist philosophical debates take place here.

Day ten: Lhasa – Namtso – Lhasa

Distance coverage: 500km, 7 hrs drive

Morning Drive

Once we leave Lhasa, we bypass Duilong Deching district, and drive toward northwest via Qinghai-Tibet highway. Once we cross Damshong and Lagen La pass, we see the beautiful Namtso Lake vista – one of the most holiest lake in Tibet and second largest salt water lake in China.
Tashi Do peninsula is the final destination of the day, and you can walk around Tashi Do peninsula and surroundings.

Afternoon Drive

We will drive back to Lhasa late afternoon, and a short break will give you the opportunity to experience the life of being a nomad in Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Day eleven: Finish the trip
